Dear Third Grade Parents,
The expectation in third grade is to complete homework Monday through Thursday. We will provide what is expected in student agendas on a weekly basis. Your cooperation assisting with homework will have a strong impact on success in the classroom. It lets your child know you care about their learning and want to be a part of this adventure.
Upon entering third grade students will focus on finding a “good fit” book and learn how to use QAR strategies (see below) to help build fluency and comprehension of what is read. Additionally, we learn test lingo and strategies to become successful at retrieving information from our written material. Another goal it to build reading stamina. Students are expected to read effectively for increasingly longer periods of time. This is a skill that is built over time; success is dependent upon this skill. You will hear of and are asked to require the use of RUNNERS at home.
RUNNERS for READING PRACTICE HOMEWORK
R = Read the questions
U = Underline or highlight important words
N = Now read the title
N = Now read the passage
E = Eliminate poor choices
R = Remember to highlight your proof in the passage
S = Select the best answer

Visual Prompt: runners-strategy
Please encourage your child to use this strategy and assist them as they learn this valuable reading strategy. Just like in math it is equally important to show how you arrive at your answer or your proof, the same is true in Reading.
QAR Question-Answer Relationships
We ask our readers to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text. Ways to help guide this process are divided below:
Right There
Author and Me
Think and Search

QAR Question-Answer Relationships
We ask our readers to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text. Ways to help guide this process are divided below:
Right There
- The answer is right there in the text. Look for key words in the question when you go back to the text to find the answer. These questions can look like this:
Author and Me
- The answer is not directly in the text. These questions require you to infer. You need to use what you already know and clues from the text to find the answer. These questions may look like this:
Think and Search
- The answer can be found in more than one place in the text. You need to put together pieces of information to find the answer.
On My Own
- The answer is not in the text. You need to use your schema and give your opinion.
